Рубрика: Sport World от admin on the September 30, 2007

PARIS: Lilian Compan and Benjamin Nivet scored to give Caen a 2-1 win over Toulouse and move the team out of the relegation zone in the French league Sunday.

Compan put Caen ahead in the 12th minute and Nivet added another in the 55th, before Achille Emana pulled a goal back for Toulouse in injury time.

The match was rescheduled from the third round and improved Caen into 16th place with seven points from eight matches.

Toulouse remains in 12th place with 11 points and lost to Caen for the second time in a matter of days after being knocked out of the French League Cup by the Normany side during the week.

In another rescheduled, third-round match Saturday, Lyon beat Lens 3-0 with goals from Fabio Santos, Kim Kallstrom and Karim Benzema to move level with Nancy at the top with 19 points.

Big win for the Americans, and for Weir

MONTREAL: The United States won the Presidents Cup. Mike Weir gave Canada quite a consolation prize.

The Americans won enough of the singles matches Sunday to capture the Presidents Cup for the second straight time, giving them an international victory in cup competition for the first time since 1993.

That didn't stop the relentless cheers that rocked Royal Montreal on a spectacular autumn day, especially when Weir won the final two holes to beat Tiger Woods and send his country home feeling like a winner.

Weir won the Masters four years ago, and he wasn't sure which felt sweeter.

“It's right there with it,” Weir said.

United States joins ranks of discontent over reducing World Cup

Рубрика: Sport World от admin on the September 30, 2007

MONTPELLIER, France: Takudzwa Ngwenya's stunning run around Bryan Habana could become the perfect case study for why teams like the United States should be at the Rugby World Cup.

If the Americans didn't qualify, Zimbabwe-born Ngwenya would never have had the chance to show up the world's best winger in front of more than 30,000 people on Sunday night.

That and Ngwenya's other performances in France have lured contract offers from big European clubs.

With speculation rife that the International Rugby Board is considering trimming its marquee tournament from 20 to 16 teams, there has been focus at the end of the group stage about who might not make it in 2011.

The United States finished winless in Group A, closing with a 64-15 loss to South Africa.

Canada and Japan finished with a draw and three losses apiece in Group B, and coaches of both countries have been vocal about the need to expand rugby rather than restrict it.

Fiji's upset win over Wales to advance to the quarterfinals and Tonga's brave run that started with two wins and ended with two losses in Group A have highlighted that the so-called gap between the top tier and the second-tier rugby nations is not overwhelming.

“How do they aim for the next World Cup if they're virtually ruled out before it starts,” Thorburn said, adding that splitting the World Cup into two tournaments would be futile.

After whirlwind week in London, Ducks get ready for even tougher trip

Рубрика: Sport World от admin on the September 30, 2007

LONDON: Now comes the hard part for the Anaheim Ducks.

After a whirlwind week in London — where the team paraded the Stanley Cup all over the city and played back-to-back games against the Los Angeles Kings — the defending champions aren't exactly getting a rest.

Next up: a road game on Wednesday in Detroit — on paper a much tougher challenge than playing the Kings on neutral ground — and the Ducks have to yet again deal with a trans-Atlantic trip and the jet lag that comes with it.

Meanwhile, the perennial preseason favorite Red Wings are eager to avenge its Western Conference finals loss to Anaheim.

“It's their home opener, so it's gonna be pretty difficult,” Ducks captain Chris Pronger said.
